Ex-Red Wings Defender On Fire With New Team

Date:

Sometimes, the grass is actually greener on the other side.

That is an impressive thing for Shayne Gostisbehere to say, the former Detroit Red Wings defender who now plays for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Especially considering the 2023-24 season was incredible for the one they call “Ghost.”

In 81 games, he recorded 10 goals and 46 assists for 56 points. He did that while averaging 19:05 on ice, which was in no small part due to his deployment on the power play.

Averaging 3:21 a game with the man advantage, he accumulated 29 power play points.

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brindamour is a very intelligent coach. This is clear from the four minutes a game that he gives his new defender on the power play.

Gostisbehere has used his time wisely, recording nine points in the first nine games. Five of those points have come from the man advantage.

He’s been attached at the hip to fellow Hurricanes’ newcomer Sean Walker. Gostisbehere has spent time with every other defenseman on the team. However, he’s spent 85.8 percent of his time with Walker.

Gostisbehere ranks fourth among the Hurricanes’ defensemen in ice time. With an average of 18:48 minutes per game, he is only behind Jaccob Slavin (21:31), Brent Burns (21:06), and Dmitry Orlov (19:39).

With the season being very young still, anything could happen. It’s time to see just how green this grass is for Gostisbehere.
