Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, located on Flores Island, erupted on Sunday at 11.57 p.m. (1557 GMT), belching a fiery-red column of lava, volcanic ash and blazing rocks, according to information and images shared by Indonesia’s volcanology agency.

A joint team comprised of police, military and search and rescue officials was dispatched to the area to evacuate residents from the nearest villages. Authorities are still gathering data on the number of evacuees.

The agency raised the alert level of the volcano to the highest level and said a four-mile (seven-kilometer) radius from the crater must be cleared. It warned of potential flash floods and cold lava flows in the coming days.
