India are currently taking on Australia in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Rohit Sharma returned to open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, after batting lower down the order at no.6 ever since he returned in the second Test of the series. However, the Indian captain continued his horror run of form in Test matches as he was dismissed after scoring just 3 runs from 5 deliveries. After scoring just 19 runs in the series so far, many have speculated that Rohit Sharma’s career in whites might be coming to an end. According to a report, this might just become a reality.

According to a report by news agency PTI, the chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar is currently in Melbourne and might have a chat with Rohit Sharma regarding his future in Test cricket, after the India captain has scored just 155 runs from 8 Tests at an average of 11.07.

The report also states that the popular consensus is that if India fail to qualify for the World Test Championship 2025 final, then the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar series at Sydney might be the last time that Rohit Sharma might be seen in red-ball cricket.

Rohit Sharma Felt Uncomfortable Batting In Middle Order

According to the PTI report, Rohit Sharma was not comfortable batting in the middle order in the second and third Test matches. Hence, Shubman Gill was dropped from the playing XI in order to accommodate Rohit Sharma at the top of the order.

Rohit replaced KL Rahul in the opening spot, despite Rahul being the top-run getter for India in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. However, his stay lasted only five balls, as he top-edged a short ball from Pat Cummins as he attempted a half-hearted pull shot. The ball landed straight into the hands of Scott Boland, as the Indian captain was dismissed for just 5 runs.
