All-Orange County boys basketball player Brannon Martinsen has withdrawn from Mater Dei, Monarchs coach Gary McKnight confirmed Sunday.
Martinsen, a 6-7 forward who is a junior, led Mater Dei in scoring last season at 17 points a game and was named All-CIF Open Division, All-Orange County and All-Trinity League first team. He averaged six rebounds a game.
Martinsen missed several games at the end of the season after he suffered a broken tibia (shinbone) on Jan. 30 in a game against St. John Bosco.
Martinsen’s school destination is unknown. He reportedly has scholarship offers from many colleges including UCLA and USC.
“I wish him the best,” McKnight said. “If he ever needs my help I’m just a phone call away.”
Mater Dei has a strong group of returning players, including junior guard Luke Barnett who made a team-high 113 3-pointers last season and averaged 15 points a game. Barnett was All-County first team last season. Also back are returning starters Owen Berna at guard and Blake Davidson at forward.
Brandon Benjamin, who averaged 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds per game last season as a junior at Mater Dei, returned to Canyon where he was the Orange County boys basketball player of the year in the 2022-23 season as a sophomore.
