NEW DELHI: Former England skipper Kevin Pietersen has stirred a discussion about the scheduling of England’s Test matches, urging cricket authorities to prioritise domestic cricket summers to nurture the sport’s future.
Pietersen took to X to state: “I think it’s only fair to ALWAYS have a summer of cricket in your home country. The only way to grow the game effectively [is] by allowing youngsters to watch their heroes live.”

His comment comes in the wake of England’s demanding 2024 Test cricket calendar, spanning multiple continents and leaving limited room for young English fans to witness games live during the critical summer months.
In the summer of 2024, England played six home Tests against West Indies and Sri Lanka from July to September.
The successful series were capped by dominating wins, such as their 10-wicket victory at Lord’s against West Indies and a 190-run triumph against Sri Lanka.

However, critics, including Pietersen, argue that the essence of summer cricket could be overshadowed by a crowded international calendar that prioritises year-round commitments.
England’s schedule moved swiftly from home matches to away series in Pakistan and New Zealand, with no respite, leading to a gruelling workload for players and less consistent opportunities for English fans to engage with the national team during domestic conditions.
While the team maintained high standards, such as defeating Pakistan by an innings and overwhelming New Zealand in Wellington, fatigue and logistical strain surfaced in extended tours.
Looking ahead, England’s future fixtures include hosting Zimbabwe for a solitary Test in May 2025 and India for a marquee series starting in June.
