Date:

Angelo Mathews praised Sanath Jayasuriya for revitalising Sri Lankan cricket. The team is currently in a strong position to secure a victory in the second Test match against New Zealand.

Sri Lanka’s recent performances in international cricket have been nothing short of remarkable. After a period of struggles, the team has staged a stunning comeback, defeating some of the top-ranked teams in the world.

Sri Lanka’s resurgence in International cricket

One of the most significant victories came in the ODI series against India, which Sri Lanka won after a 27-year drought. They also clinched a memorable Test victory in England after a decade-long wait. Now, the team is on the brink of another historic achievement: a Test series win over New Zealand after 15 years. This resurgence has naturally led to questions about what has fueled Sri Lanka’s newfound success. Angelo Mathews, a key member of the team, believes that the answer lies not only in the on-field performances but also in the positive and refreshing atmosphere within the dressing room.

Sanath Jayasuriya’s impact on Sri Lanka’s success

Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka’s veteran all-rounder and former captain, has credited Sanath Jayasuriya for playing a crucial role in the team’s recent resurgence. Jayasuriya, who is currently serving as the head coach, has had a significant influence on the Sri Lankan cricket setup. As the director of cricket and now the head coach, Jayasuriya has brought a renewed sense of confidence and belief to the team. Mathews has highlighted Jayasuriya’s calming presence and his ability to communicate effectively with the players as key factors in rejuvenating the Sri Lankan team.

Mathews further emphasized that under Jayasuriya’s leadership, the Sri Lankan dressing room has become a more positive and supportive environment. Players now feel empowered to express themselves without fear of failure. Mathews attributed Sri Lanka’s resurgence to the new coach’s approach. Jayasuriya has been instrumental in nurturing young talent while providing the necessary support to senior players, allowing them to perform at their peak.

Sanath Jayasuriya has done a wonderful job grooming young players: Mathews

Beyond tactical brilliance, Jayasuriya prioritizes maintaining the national team’s focus on a single goal. He emphasizes the importance of unity and cohesion within the team, creating a harmonious environment where every player is aligned with the broader team vision. According to Mathews, this approach has been instrumental in Sri Lanka’s recent success.

“I think Sanath Jayasuriya is taking over. He’s given confidence when he was the cricket director, and now he’s become the coach. Even though he gets nervous, he gives confidence to all of us. That makes a massive difference. In a dressing room, you have to keep it calm,” Mathews said at the press conference in Galle.

“You should be able to communicate with the players in a correct way. We’ve been given the freedom. We are all working towards one goal, and everyone’s on the same page. Sanath has done a wonderful job grooming young players as well as looking after each and every one of us. I think he’s done a tremendous job. I wish him all the very best in the future,” he added.
