Arsenal loanee drops out of squad after manager is sacked

Arsenal loanee Charles Sagoe Jr. dropped out of Shrewsbury Town’s squad after their decision to sack head coach Paul Hurst last weekend.

Arsenal winger Charles Sagoe Jr. played 45 minutes as Shrewsbury Town were eliminated from the FA Cup by Salford City last week on Saturday, and by Sunday the club had decided to part ways with manager Paul Hurst.

Sean Parrish has taken charge of the club on an interim basis, with Shrewsbury confirming he’ll be managing the team for at least two games. After that, they’re searching for a longer-term appointment.

The first of those two matches was on Saturday, with Shrewsbury travelling away to Burton Albion, and Sagoe Jr. was dropped from the squad completely.

There’s been no word of an injury for Sagoe Jr., and Parrish admitted after the game that he simply had to make some tough decisions when picking his squad for the match.

“It’s nothing personal,” Parrish said of the players he left out. “I can only pick 11, with so many subs, so somebody’s going to be disappointed.

“They’ve took it, they’ve dusted themselves down. As I said there, it’s not an easy job…but it’s the nature of the beast unfortunately.

“I’ve got to now look towards Tuesday and pick another team, so it doesn’t get any easier.”

Shrewsbury lost 2-0 to go bottom of League One, below the day’s opponents.

Shrewsbury’s midweek fixture is an EFL Trophy match against Walsall. The EFL Trophy is generally viewed as an opportunity for rotation, so Sagoe Jr. will hope to come back in for that one.

After that, the future of his loan spell will likely depend on which manager the club decide to appoint.

The 20-year-old made 14 appearances under Hurst, though he only featured in the starting lineup for three of their 13 league games following his arrival on loan.

He’ll want to be a much more consistent starter under the next boss, but his absence from the squad on Saturday isn’t encouraging on that front.
