Asia poised to lead global polypropylene capacity expansions through 2028

Date:

Asia is anticipated to be at the forefront of global polypropylene capacity increases by the year 2028. This growth is expected to be driven by significant investments in production facilities across the region. As a result, the region will likely solidify its position as a key player in the polypropylene market, contributing substantially to the industry’s expansion on a worldwide scale.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 32.43 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) from more than 70 new-build, planned, and announced projects. As for capacity expansions, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.07mtpa from one planned project. Within Asia, the majority of polypropylene capacity additions are from upcoming projects in China, with a total capacity of 21.92mtpa. However, the highest capacity addition in the region is from a planned project in Indonesia, ‘PT Pertamina Rosneft Processing and Petrochemicals Tuban Polypropylene Plant’. It is expected to commence operations in 2028 with a capacity of 1.16mtpa. ‘Fujian Eversun New Material Putian Polypropylene Plant 2’ is expected to add the next major capacity in the region with 1.10mtpa. Located in the Fujian province of China, the plant is expected to come online in 2026.

In the Middle East, there are a total of 24 planned and announced projects in Iran, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, which are expected to add a total capacity of 9.75mtpa by 2028. ‘Sasa Polyester Sanayi Yumurtalik Polypropylene Plant 1’ and ‘Sasa Polyester Sanayi Yumurtalik Polypropylene Plant 2’ account for the highest capacity additions in the region, each with a capacity of 1.0mtpa. Both are being planned in Turkey and have received the necessary approvals for construction. They are anticipated to come online in 2027 and 2028, respectively.
