Auburn women’s basketball blows by UVA in SEC/ACC Challenge

Date:

The Auburn women’s basketball team continued its great start to the season on Thursday night in the SEC/ACC Challenge. After the men failed to earn a victory, the women did just that, beating previously 6-3 Virginia 66-57.

Auburn’s victory improved the Tigers to 6-3 on the young season. It was head coach Johnnie Harris and company’s first victory away from Neville Arena this season, having previously lost to Oregon and Cal on a west coast trip earlier this winter.

Perhaps most impressively, the Tigers were able to capture the win without the help of star guard Taliah Scott, who missed the contest with an injury. Forward DeYona Gaston soaked up Scott’s normal scoring usage, as the senior put together one of her best performances of the season in a 23-point, 6-rebound, 5-steal effort. Senior forward Taylen Collins (14 points) was the only other Tiger to reach double figures in the contest, while senior guard Mar’shaun Bostic led the Tigers with 7 assists.

The Tigers big victory improved them to 6-3 on the young season. Auburn has four non-conference games remaining before entering the guantlet of the SEC position of the schedule. If they hope to make a return in the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers likely need to enter conference play 9-4 at the very worst, then play around .500 basketball in the SEC.
