Austin hosting F1 and Texas vs. Georgia this weekend. See road closures, areas to avoid

With the F1 United States Grand Prix, a big UT football game, an Austin FC soccer game and more events throughout the metropolis, driving around the Texas capital might prove especially difficult this weekend.

As Austin becomes the place to be, it might also become the place to avoid driving in. Which roads will be closed, and which areas should be avoided?

Events in Austin this weekend

So much to do, so little time! Austin is hosting several sporting events this weekend, including an international racing event. And, as the heat temporarily recedes from the 90s, more people are likely to participate in the outdoor festivities.

Some of the events coming to Austin this weekend include:

• Friday-Sunday: F1 United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas

• Saturday, 6:30-10:30 p.m.: Texas vs. Georgia football game at Royal Memorial Stadium

• Saturday, 8 p.m.: Austin FC vs. Colorado Rapids soccer game at Q2 Stadium

• Sunday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.: Livestrong Challenge and 5K/10K biking and running events in the downtown/Lady Bird Lake area

Austin road closure maps this weekend

This weekend’s events will prompt the following road closures, as reported by Austin Mobility News:

Formula One United States Grand Prix

Those attending the F1 race at Circuit of the Americas have a few options for getting there, according to Austin Mobility News. They can take a shuttle from Waterloo Park downtown or the Travis County Exposition Center in East Austin, or purchase a parking pass to drive. The shuttles will affect traffic in the area around Waterloo Park.

Ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft will operate out of the racetrack’s McAngus parking lot, and a complimentary tram will ferry attendees from McAngus to the circuit’s Grand Plaza. Ride-hailing service vehicles will not be allowed on COTA Boulevard.

Expect delays and street closures downtown near Waterloo Park daily through Sunday, 5 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., unless noted otherwise:

• Parking off East 15th Street: Garage access only, both directions.

• Parking off Red River Street: Garage access only, southbound lane of Red River Street from garage access to East 15th Street and to

• Southbound lane of Red River Street: Closed from garage access to East 12th Street.

• Trinity Street: Lane reduction, cross traffic lanes open from East 10th Street to East 15th Street on Sunday from 5 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. (No F1 shuttle staging Saturday.)

• East 12th Street (Ride-hailing service pickup/drop-off): Parking lanes between Trinity Street and Red River Street are closed.

• East 12th Street (Micromobility parking): Parking lanes between Trinity Street and Red River Street are closed.

• East 10th Street: Lane reduction, cross traffic lanes open from East 11th Street to East 13th Street.

Texas Longhorns vs. Georgia Bulldogs

This weekend’s UT football game is a big one and is expected to draw a huge crowd. Traffic around Royal-Memorial Stadium will be heavily congested, and alternative transportation is recommended. Several streets in the area will be either completely or partially closed Saturday morning.

• San Jacinto Boulevard NO THROUGH TRAFFIC from East Dean Keeton Street to East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

• Robert Dedman Drive NO THROUGH TRAFFIC from East Dean Keeton Street to East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

• Red River Street CLOSED at police discretion from East Dean Keeton Street to Clyde Littlefield Drive.

• Interstate 35 Exit Southbound Ramp CLOSED at Manor Road until end of game.

• I-35 Exit Northbound Ramp CLOSED at Manor Road until end of game.

• Eastbound West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard CLOSED from Guadalupe Street to I-35 after game.

• Westbound East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard CLOSED from I-35 to Trinity Street until end of game.

• Eastbound East 18th Street CLOSED from San Jacinto Boulevard to Trinity Street after kickoff.

• San Jacinto Boulevard CLOSED from East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to West 15th Street after kickoff.

• East 17th Street CLOSED for Texas Tailgarten around Scholz Garten from San Jacinto Boulevard to Trinity Street, 7 a.m. until kickoff.

• Trinity Street CLOSED, lane closures vary from West 15th Street to East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard after kickoff.

• Red River Street CLOSED, lane closures vary from the Medical Center to East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard after kickoff.

Austin FC vs. Colorado Rapids

Due to limited parking at Q2 Stadium for the final soccer match of the season, fans are encouraged to check out public transit and ride-hailing service options for Saturday’s game.

Livestrong Challenge, 5K/10K

Several roads will be closed at various times Saturday through Sunday evening for the Livestrong Challenge and 5K/10K race. Bicyclists will begin downtown for the Livestrong Challenge, while runners and walkers will participate in a 5K or 10K around Lady Bird Lake. Times of the closures vary.

• Lake Austin Boulevard access to Cesar Chavez Street CLOSED, 6-11 a.m. Sunday

• MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1) north and southbound access to Cesar Chavez Street CLOSED, 6-11 a.m. Sunday

• Cesar Chavez Street CLOSED from MoPac Boulevard to Lavaca Street, 6-11 a.m. Sunday

• Southbound lanes of South First Street CLOSED from Cesar Chavez Street to West Riverside Drive, 6-11 a.m. Sunday

• West Riverside Drive CLOSED from Lee Barton Drive to South First Street 8 p.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday
