Australian Golden Retriever Police Dog Is Truly the Happiest Member of the Precinct

Date:

The Queensland Police Department in Queensland, Australia has a very special officer in their squad. Most people would call him a hero. We’re talking of course about their Golden Retriever on staff, who is the best police officer they got. The department recently introduced the Golden, who we’re calling “Officer Goodboy” to the internet. And the internet fell completely in love.

When “Pup Pawtrol’s” on the case anything could happen. But in the clip the police department shared, it was the Golden who needed help.

It was the case of the century. The Golden Retriever had lost his squeaker — where, oh where could it be?

Thankfully, the police had an idea. In the video they shared, they cracked the case in seconds flat and got the pup his squeaker. Then they invited him onto the team. We hate to say this, but he’s probably the best hire they’ve ever had. The streets are safer thanks to the Golden.

People in the comments section loved the police pup. “Look at his proud face after destroying things,” joked one person. “Now I really feel safe,” someone else praised. “This absolutely made my day. What a good officer,” added someone else. “Awww doggo clocked onto a shift,” someone else gushed.

What Do Police Dogs Do?

More than just being adorable, police dogs play a real part in police work. A police dog has several different responsibilities, sometimes they’re focused on just one area and other times they have many different functions they perform. Most police dogs need to have certain qualities to be able to do this type of work, so they tend to only be one of a handful of breeds; Belgian MalinoisGerman Shepherd DogsBloodhounds, Dutch Shepherds, or Labrador Retrievers.

Police use dogs in several different kinds on scenarios. First they use them for apprehension. These dogs are trained to bite suspects and hold them hostage. Police tend to use herding dogs for this type of work because they’re strong and smart. They need to decide when someone’s a threat.

Dogs also have an incredible sense of smell, which can also be helpful. Dogs can detect things that humans can’t really sense, like illegal drugs, explosives, accelerants, and crime scene evidence. These dogs are frequently used at the airport and for border entries. Incredibly, military dogs use their advanced sense of smell to suss out landmines. Police dogs can also be used in search and rescue missions, which is also important work.

So as you can see, dogs are crucial to police and their work. Plus, they look pretty darn adorable in those little police vests.
