Over the past few months, there has been a lot written about Barcelona captain Frenkie de Jong and his contract situation.
The 27-year-old has been out of action for more than five months due to an ankle injury and his alleged salary has been used as a stick to beat him during his continued absence.
De Jong set things right in an interview with the club media earlier today, stating that the figures revealed in the media about his wages were all far from being true.
“They said a lot of things about me, that I don’t want to have surgery and that they pay me a lot of money,” he said.
“Very high figures, like €37 million and it’s very, very far from that. I’m not close to earning that, I’m very far from it.”
No progress in renewal talks
While his true salary might be lower than the aforementioned figure, it is still significantly high for Barcelona in their current economic situation.
As such, the club have been trying to negotiate a new contract with De Jong for months now, with a salary cut being proposed.
But, as reported by The Daily Briefing, Barcelona have made no progress on the renewal talks for the Dutchman, even though a new offer had been sent to him months ago.
As per the report, the salary that the Catalans are now offering De Jong is lower than what he currently earns but not a low sum either.
However, there has been no response from the midfielder, who has been focusing on recovering from his injury and making a comeback.
De Jong’s contract with Barcelona expires in 2026 and he would enter the final year of his deal next summer, putting the club in a difficult position.
As such, there have been reports that the Blaugrana might decide to put him on the transfer list if there is no progress made over a new contract.
