After experiencing the worst run in 16 years, FC Barcelona will look to return to winning ways as they take on Barbastro on January 4.
Barça will take on the fourth-tier opponent in a Round of 32 clash of the Copa Del Rey – a game where Hansi Flick is likely to rest his key players.
The German, after all, will have one eye on the key Supercup encounter against Athletic Club on January 8.
Ansu Fati likely to start vs Barbastro
The game against Barbastro, therefore, will present Flick with an opportunity to start some of the more under-utilised first-team stars.
It was already reported that Frenkie de Jong is expected to start against Barbastro. But the Dutchman won’t be the only first-team star featuring in this contest.
According to Diario SPORT, Ansu Fati is tipped to start against Barbastro, having recently returned from a brief injury layoff.
Fati was able to make the team against Atletico Madrid but was an unused substitute. But the Copa Del Rey encounter will present an excellent opportunity for the young attacker to prove his mettle.
What’s in store for Fati in January?
That being said, it must be noted that Fati will continue to face an uncertain future at Barcelona regardless of his performance against Barbastro.
As per the report, Fati and his representative have sent a clear message to Barcelona about the player’s desire to continue in Catalonia.
Fati is willing to fight for his place in the team. But in order to be counted prominently, he needs to perform against Barbastro at all costs.
Barcelona, for their part, are unlikely to consider any new exits in January. But if Fati’s struggles continue, a summer exit could be on the anvil.
