Inaki Pena has had to shoulder the responsibility of being the first-choice starter in goal for FC Barcelona this season following the serious injury sustained by captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Even though the Blaugrana roped in an experienced player like Wojciech Szczesny as an emergency signing to replace Ter Stegen, Pena has not given any reason for manager Hansi Flick to make a change.
The German tactician has gone on record on multiple occasions, stating that he sees the 25-year-old La Masia product as the No. 1 in goal ahead of Szczesny, who is still waiting for his Barça debut.
Barcelona intend to renew Pena’s contract
So much so that, Barcelona’s management and coaching staff are determined to offer a contract renewal to Inaki Pena, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2026.
This claim comes from Mundo Deportivo, who report that both the club’s board and technical team are clear that the extension is warranted, as the player has earned it through his performances on the field.
The Blaugrana now intend to find the right moment to present the 25-year-old with an extension offer, regardless of whether any proposals come in for him this summer.
Pena has silenced doubts following his role as the stand-in goalkeeper for the injured Ter Stegen. He passed two significant tests with flying colours in the matches against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, where he delivered solid performances.
Flick, along with Barcelona’s sporting director Deco and the players are pleased with how the goalkeeper has responded, despite some initial criticism.
The German tactician is also believed to be appreciative of Pena’s personality and mental strength in handling the situation. As such, Flick has given his approval for Pena’s renewal.
Pena, who joined La Masia at a young age, extended his contract until 2026 back in May 2023, with a release clause set at €400 million. If everything goes well, a new deal is on the horizon for the Spaniard.
