Barcelona injured superstar hoping to make a comeback before season ends

Following a dismal performance against AS Monaco, Marc-Andre ter Stegen was looking to vindicate himself when he appeared against Villarreal on Sunday evening.

The German even started out well, notably making a brilliant save to deny Pepe. But his season came to an abrupt end, as he picked up a nasty injury to his right knee.

Barcelona confirmed the severity of his injury, adding that the goalkeeper requires surgery and could be out for the entire season.

This is a huge blow for Barcelona, who have Inaki Pena as the only available alternative in goal and the club might be forced to go after a new goalkeeper in January.

Ter Stegen hopeful of playing again this season

Despite ominous signs over his fitness, ter Stegen remains upbeat and is hopeful of appearing again this season, reports SPORT.

The outlet further suggests that ter Stegen will work harder to try and reappear in spring next year, which could possibly give him enough time to play a few matches before the season ends.

Ter Stegen is said to have pushed very hard to get his surgery done as early as today so that he does not even lose a day out.

It appears the German international is eyeing a recovery period of about seven and a half months. By that time, there will be up to five games remaining for the season, provided Barcelona do well in the Champions League.

Ter Stegen, therefore, could be able to at least appear in the Champions League semifinals and the final. He may also be able to appear in El Clasico.

It seems the former Borussia Monchengladbach stopper is eyeing a similar recovery as Courtois last season.

The Belgian had picked up a serious injury at the start of the season, but returned just in time to participate in the Champions League final.
