Basketball shooting competition seeks participants in southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa

Date:

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – An organization based out of Wisconsin is looking to branch into Minnesota and Iowa, all in the name of having fun while shooting some hoops.

‘2s Frees 3s’ was started in 2022 by NBA veteran Steve Novak and Brian Lammi. ‘2s Frees 3s’ hosts basketball shooting events for people of all ages and genders. Participants try their hand at shooting 2 pointers, free throws and three pointers.

Shooters have the opportunity to compete in their respective age divisions (9 and under, 10-12, 13-15, 16-54, 55+). They start out at the regional level, with all shooters who get a score of 11 or higher advancing to sectionals, from there the top five scores in each division advance to state where runner ups, champions and a $10,000 grand prize winner is crowned. One of the most recent top winners was a nine-year-old Wisconsin boy who won $10,000.

According to ‘2s Frees 3s’, registration fees are usually $10-$20 per participant, however, some of the first events that will be hosted in Minnesota will be free to join. The organization also gives back 25-50% of registration fee earnings to organizations that compete.

All participants need to do to qualify is have access to a gym, a group of people and ‘2s Frees 3s’ comes and sets it up.

“We are wanting to use the power of basketball to come to Minnesota and to Iowa and we hope one day over this whole world, we can bring ‘2s Frees 3s’, but for now, we want to be in Minnesota and introduce this there and get a lot of hoopers and ballers to see who the top shooters are,” Novak said.

‘2s Frees 3s’ is also looking for adaptive groups to participate in the competition.
