MUMBAI: Indian cricket seems to be facing internal turbulence following its humiliating 3-0 Test series defeat to New Zealand. On Thursday, a detailed review meeting took place at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.
“Yes, there was nearly a six-hour meeting between BCCI secretary Jay Shah, skipper Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.apart from the maiden Test series defeat to the Kiwis was reviewed, there was also a lot of brainstorming on how to prepare in the best possible manner for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series in Australia,” a source confirmed to TOI.
While the specifics remain under wraps, there’s speculation of discontent within the selection committee, especially around ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s last-minute withdrawal from the third Test at Wankhede Stadium, where India suffered a 25-run loss on a turning track.”It appears the selectors weren’t informed about Bumrah’s sudden exit before the Test,” the source added, “and this communication gap was highlighted to BCCI leadership. There needs to be better communication all around. All must be on the same page.”
Even though head coach Gautam Gambhir indicated that Bumrah wouldn’t be rested, a BCCI statement on the morning of the match announced, “Mr Jasprit Bumrah has not fully recovered from his viral illness and was unavailable for the third Test in Mumbai.”
In the two Tests he played, Bumrah took just three wickets at an average of 42.33 across 41 overs. His absence led to India fielding an out-of-form Mohammed Siraj, who went wicketless in the match.
