The Chicago Bears have sacked head coach Matt Eberflus after suffering a sixth straight defeat.

The Bears lost 23-10 to the Detroit Lions on Thursday, marking a third consecutive NFL defeat decided on the final play.

Eberflus took over at the Bears in January 2022 but the side finished his debut season with a 3-14 record.

They began the 2023 season with a 2-7 record before going on to win five of their final eight games.

However, their poor start has led them to fire a coach in-season for the first time.

“I thank Matt for his hard work, professionalism and dedication to our organisation,” general manager Ryan Poles said.

“We extend our gratitude for his commitment to the Chicago Bears and wish him and his family the best moving forward.”

Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will serve as interim head coach.

Chicago – who drafted quarterback Caleb Williams with the number one pick in April – are bottom of the NFC North table with four wins and eight defeats.
