President Joe Biden will travel to the Philadelphia area on Tuesday for a campaign event supporting U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), the White House said.
Biden is scheduled to be in Milwaukee earlier in the day Tuesday to promote his administration’s work on “replacing lead pipes and creating good-paying jobs.” Details about the campaign event in Pennsylvania were not available Monday.
Biden is a longtime ally of Casey, a fellow Scranton native.
Casey endorsed Biden just minutes after he formally announced his candidacy for president in April 2019.
During Biden’s State of the Union address in March, the president shouted out “Bobby” Casey and called on Congress to pass Casey’s bill aimed at stopping “shrinkflation,” Casey’s preferred term for corporate price gouging.
Casey, who is seeking a fourth term in the U.S. Senate, stood by Biden as calls emerged on him to step away from the presidential race. On the same day Biden announced he was not seeking reelection in July, Casey joined Biden in supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’ bid for the presidency.
Casey’s Republican opponent Dave McCormick has often criticized the incumbent during the campaign for voting with the Biden-Harris administration.
The campaigns did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
Although Biden has taken a backseat campaigning since he stepped away from the top of the ticket, this won’t be the first time he’s campaigning in Pennsylvania since he bowed out. He spent Labor Day in Pittsburgh alongside Harris promoting her bid for the White House to steelworkers.
Biden’s most recent visit to the state was on Sept. 16 for an official visit to Philadelphia for the 2024 National Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Week Conference.
Former President Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s candidate for president, has two rallies scheduled in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, including one in Biden’s boyhood hometown of Scranton. Former President Barack Obama will be campaigning on behalf of the Harris ticket in Pittsburgh on Thursday.
Polling shows Trump and Harris in a dead heat for Pennsylvania’s 19 electoral votes, while Casey appears to have a slight edge over McCormick. The Cook Political Report, a national ratings outlet, describes the presidential race in the Keystone State as a toss-up, while labeling the race between Casey and McCormick as leans Democratic.
