Black Caps secure historic Test series whitewash over India after dreadful collapse

Date:

The Black Caps have created history in Mumbai, sealing a Test series whitewash over India after successfully defending a 147-run target at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

The hosts were bowled out for 121 on a spinning wicket to suffer their third-straight loss against New Zealand, marking the first time India has been whitewashed in a home series of at least three Tests.

And the Kiwis did it without superstar Kane Williamson.

India’s batters looked all at sea against New Zealand’s spinners, with tweaker Ajaz Patel taking 6-57 and part-timer Glenn Phillips contributing three scalps.

“We’re just a bunch of Kiwis taking on the world,” New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell said after the win.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was the first to depart, top-edging a short ball from Black Caps quick Matt Henry for 11 before Shubman Gill left alone a delivery from Patel that crashed into off stump.

Patel then removed Indian superstar Virat Kohli for 1, caught at first slip, before Phillips trapped opener Yashasvi Jaiswal on the pads for 5.

A few minutes later, Sarfaraz Khan slogged a full toss from Patel directly towards the boundary rider at cow corner, with India losing 5-16 in a dreadful collapse.

Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant offered some resistance, cracking a half-century and combining with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for a 42-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Jadeja was caught at bat-pad for 6, becoming Patel’s fourth victim, before Pant departed in similar fashion for 64 after a successful review from the Kiwis.

Patel and Phillips cleaned up the tail to silence the Mumbai crowd and seal the series whitewash.

Earlier on Sunday, New Zealand was bowled out for 174 in their second innings, with Indian spinner Jadeja snaring a five-wicket haul, finishing with ten scalps for the match.
