Blackhawks Have 2 Firsts Despite Loss to Islanders

Date:

The Chicago Blackhawks didn’t have a horrible game in the loss to the New York Islanders. At the very least, there was a comeback effort that fell just short and the team didn’t roll over and just take the loss.

The Blackhawks experienced two firsts last night despite losing. The first was Drew Commesso’s NHL debut in net. He relieved Arvid Soderblom after Chicago’s current starter allowed five goals on 19 shots.

Commesso had been recalled from the AHL another time this season, but didn’t get in a game. This time, both Laurent Brossoit and Petr Mrazek are on the injured reserve and Commesso is the backup for the time being.

He may have gotten his first game in the NHL this weekend as the Blackhawks play the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders again on the weekend, but instead he didn’t have time to think about getting in net and finished out the game stopping two shots and allowing no goals.

The 22-year-old Commesso will likely see the second game of the Blackhawks’ back-to-back on the weekend so Soderblom doesn’t face the Islanders again so soon. This should be a good test and a way for Chicago to actually see Commesso start a game and play 60 minutes.

The other first that happened in the loss to the Islanders was T.J. Brodie scoring his first goal as a member of the Blackhawks. He started the comeback in the third period after the Islanders got three quick goals to put the game at 5-1.

Brodie has generally been playing on the third pairing and was with Kevin Korchinski to take some of the pressure off. Brodie now has six points on the season and is a -8. The veteran plays a hair under 16 minutes per night and is the fourth or fifth option on the penalty kill. He’s no stranger to getting in on the offense as he has reached the 40-point mark twice in his career and put up 26 points last season.
