Breaking: Seider Signs New Deal to Remain in Detroit for Seven More Seasons

Date:

The Red Wings have officially completed the summer’s business with the announcement this afternoon that defenseman Moritz Seider has agreed to terms on a new contract, resolving his negotiations as a restricted free agent.  Per the team’s official Twitter account, Seider has agreed to a seven-year extension worth $8,550,000 per season.

A matter of minutes after coach Derek Lalonde said that Seider’s absence hadn’t been a distraction following the last practice on the first day of training camp, Lalonde’s words were proven true, and Seider will be signed.  It remains to be seen when exactly Seider will be able to join his teammates in Traverse City.

The reporting in the build up to Seider and Raymond’s signings was that the D man would wind up with the bigger deal, and now that both are signed, that has proven correct by roughly half a million dollars.  Detroit couldn’t match the eight-year term (the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement) it agreed to with Raymond for Seider, but seven is of course not far off, and now Detroit has its two budding superstars locked in for years to come.  It may also prove a benefit to not have both stars hit unrestricted free agency for the first time in the same summer.

The Red Wings needed Raymond and Seider under contract and at their best to have any hope of realizing the season’s ambitions.  As of this afternoon, the business is taken care of, and it’s time to focus on the fun part on the ice.
