Birmingham City boss Chris Davies fears that defender Lee Buchanan will have a long lay-off after suffering a horror knee injury for the League One leaders in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Blackpool.
The 23-year left-back was only four games into his comeback after missing the first four months of Davies’ Blues reign with a calf injury.
But he suffered his latest problem trying to prevent Blackpool’s Kyle Joseph from shooting five minutes into the game, landing awkwardly on his left knee, which collapsed under him at the wrong angle.
After 10 minutes of treatment, Buchanan was taken off on a stretcher and then on to hospital – and Blues expect it to be a serious, season-ending injury.
“There’s no definitive news,” Davies told BBC Radio WM. “But I’ve seen the picture and it doesn’t look good. He looked to be in a lot of pain.
“It’s a real shame for someone who has worked so hard to get back to fitness. To have another big setback like that is really disappointing.
“We will have to see how he goes but he will have a scan in the next few days.”
Blues’ draw against former boss Steve Bruce’s Seasiders was only the third time they have dropped points at home this season – but they remain unbeaten at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park and stay top, a point clear of Wrexham, but with two games in hand.
Bruce added: “I said at the start of the season that I wouldn’t be surprised if they win it by 15-20 points and I’ll stay with that.
“But it was a thoroughly deserved point for us. We were the better team and created the better chances.
“We decided to have a go at them because that’s what we want to try to achieve.”
