BYU basketball has made an in-season addition to its roster

BYU has made a rare in-season addition to its roster.

Senegalese forward Khadim Mboup has officially joined the Cougars for the current 2024-25 campaign, the program announced Thursday.

This past July, Mboup was reported to have committed to BYU by Joe Tipton of On3 Sports. Per Robby McCombs of Vanquish the Foe, Mboup enrolled at Utah Prep — the same school where AJ Dybantsa currently plays — to “finish up some academic requirements,” and will now head to campus in Provo for winter semester.

Mboup is a product of the NBA Academy Africa in Senegal, where he had been training alongside 20 other professional prospects and was coached by current BYU assistent Will Voigt. He turned 18 in September and reclassified to the class of 2024 from 2025 in order to join the Cougars sooner.

“Khadim is a great young man who has worked really hard to get to this point,” BYU coach Kevin Young said in a statement. “We’re thrilled that he’s joining our program after a very successful stint with NBA Academy Africa. He is an elite level athlete that can really be disruptive on the defensive end and guard multiple positions. Khadim has tremendous upside offensively with his ability to attack the rim, combined with his smooth shooting mechanics.”

According to BYU’s statement, Mboup posted averages of 7.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for NBA Academy Africa in the 2023 Road to BAL qualification tournament. McCombs assesses Mboup as “uber-athletic” with the ability to play at both the small and power forward positions.

According to McCombs, Mboup will likely redshirt for the 2024-25 campaign, but could become a productive piece for the Cougars going forward.
