Career-high effort headlines Muskegon-area girls basketball roundup for Jan. 7

MUSKEGON, MI – The Fremont girls basketball team didn’t waste any time setting the tone during its West Michigan Conference Lakes Division matchup with Oakridge on Tuesday night.

The Packers jumped out to a 27-3 lead in the first quarter and continued to roll past the Eagles for a convincing 70-17 win and extend their winning streak to seven games.

Taylor DeKuiper led Fremont with a career-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds and five steals, while Mia Clemence added 14 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Riley Chase registered eight points and seven steals, while Ella Shriver added five points and Taylor Johnson had four points.

Cambria Guenthardt scored six points to pace Oakridge.

Fremont (7-1) will host Whitehall (6-3) on Friday, while Oakridge (2-7) will travel to Muskegon Catholic Central (3-4) on Thursday.

Below is a look at how all the Muskegon-area high school girls basketball teams fared on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025.

Mona Shores 42, Grandville 35

The Sailors trailed by six points in the third quarter but ended the game on a 13-5 run to secure an impressive non-conference win over the Bulldogs on Tuesday.

Addison Fisher scored 12 points to lead Mona Shores, while Laynie Russell and Katie Phillips each added nine points, Maddie Russell had seven points and Logan Clausen had five points.

Grace Richardson scored 19 points to lead Grandville, while Brynnly Mann added 11 points.

Mona Shores (7-2) will host Reeths-Puffer (2-7) on Friday.

Rockford 59, Muskegon 24

The Rams raced out to a 33-10 lead in the first half and continued to roll past the Big Reds for a non-conference win Tuesday night.

Anna Wypych scored a game-high 25 points to lead Rockford.

Jaila Martin and Shamari Hamilton each scored six points to pace Muskegon.

Muskegon (3-5) will host Byron Center (0-8) on Friday.

Holton 56, Hesperia 16

The Red Devils raced out to a 26-3 advantage and continued to cruise past the Panthers for the rest of the game as they picked up a lopsided win.

Aubrey Goyings finished with 16 points to lead Holton, while Mia Giddings added 10 points and Chloe McKee had eight points.

Holton (3-5) will host North Muskegon (4-4) on Friday, while Hesperia (0-6) will travel to Hart (7-1) on Thursday.

Whitehall 37, Manistee 27

The Vikings overcame a slow first half and pulled away from the Mariners down the stretch to pick up a hard-fought win in West Michigan Conference action.

Lexi Daggett finished with 19 points to lead Whitehall, while Clare Westerlund added eight points, and Sidney Shepherd had six points.

Whitehall (6-3) travels to Fremont (7-1) on Friday, while Manistee (4-4) will host Montague (5-2) on Friday.

Ludington 44, Montague 36

The Orioles held a 28-23 lead at halftime and fended off the Wildcats down the stretch to pick up a hard-fought win in West Michigan Conference action on Tuesday.

Jordyn Anderson scored 14 points to lead Ludington, while Jaelyn Laird added 10 points, Peyton Welch had nine points, Elianna Jeruzal had six points and Jacee Cole had five points.

Braylyn Bultema finished with 16 points to lead Montague, while Amanda Cederquist added nine points and Maizie Collins had six points.

Ludington (7-3) will travel to Orchard View (1-7) on Friday, while Montague (5-2) will travel to Manistee (4-4).

Shelby 51, North Muskegon 23

Jayna Bermeister finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds to pace Shelby in the win, while Michelle Peterson added 11 points and four steals and Kylie Brown had seven rebounds.

Delaney Young registered 11 points and six rebounds to lead North Muskegon, while Emma Buchmiller added four points and four steals.

Shelby (6-1) will host Mason County Central (3-4) on Friday, while North Muskegon (4-4) will travel to Holton (3-5).

Western Michigan Christian 27, Muskegon Catholic Central 20

The Warriors trailed 15-13 at halftime but managed to hold the Crusaders to just five points in the second half as they secured a low-scoring win in what proved to be a defensive battle on Tuesday.

Maddie Folkema finished with nine points to pace Western Michigan Christian, while Maria Eenigenburg added eight points.

Leonna Kotecki led Muskegon Catholic with seven points, while Andrea Johnson added five points.

Western Michigan Christian (4-0) will host Ravenna (6-2) on Friday, while Muskegon Catholic Central (3-4) will host Oakridge (2-7) on Thursday.

Hart 62, Ravenna 39

Hart (7-1) will host Hesperia (0-6) on Thursday, while Ravenna (6-2) will travel to Western Michigan Christian (4-0) on Friday.

Hopkins 60, Fruitport 29

Reegan Helderop scored 17 points to lead Hopkins, while Ali Langlois added 14 points and Cora Hall had eight points.

Fruitport (0-8) will host Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian (2-6).
