CBS Sports has released a new Top 25 and 1, updating their college basketball rankings after Kentucky upset Duke on Tuesday night.
The Wildcats defeated the Blue Devils by five at the State Farm Arena during the State Farm Champions Classic. Despite Cooper Flagg putting up 26 points, Andrew Carr’s 17 was enough to help lead Kentucky to their biggest win of the fresh, new 2024-25 campaign.
Elsewhere, many of the top teams in college basketball enjoyed victories to start out the second week of the season, including Kansas, Baylor and Ole Miss. Check out the full, updated Top 25 and 1 via CBS Sports, courtesy of Gary Parrish.
Kansas ranked No. 1 in many preseason Top 25 rankings, and they did nothing to convince voters to go elsewhere over the past week and change. They now hold one of the best wins in the country as well, after a home win against North Carolina last Friday.
The Jayhawks have two games this week to continue proving why they’re the best team in the nation. They already defeated Michigan State in the State Farm Champions Classic on Tuesday, and they’ll look to win another when they welcome Oakland to town on Saturday.
Alabama opened the season with a pair of wins, including a game against Arkansas State where they were pushed into the second half, but pulled away despite the injuries they continue to bounce back from in the rotation.
The Crimson Tide have a tough November, and it begins to take shape this week. A matchup against Purdue on Friday looms large, and whichever team gets the win will be in tremendous shape moving forward. Thankfully, they got their week started with a win on Monday over McNeese State.
Auburn probably holds the best win of the season, heading on the road to beat Houston over the weekend. To make the feat more impressive, the Tigers overcame some controversy during the travel there and still made a big statement.
Bruce Pearl’s team receives a slight reprieve during Week 2. Auburn only has one game, as they’ll welcome Kent State to Neville Arena on Wednesday evening.
North Carolina started their season off with a win over Elon, but they fell in their second game of the campaign, bringing their record to 1-1. However, nobody will blame them for the loss, as they only came up three points short against the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks.
It was a tough pill to swallow for the Tar Heels, but they’ve had some time to get over it, as they won’t play again until Friday. North Carolina will welcome American to the Dean E. Smith Center.
After the opening week, UConn gave no reason for anyone to think a drop-off is coming. The Huskies took care of business and looked like the new-look roster has plenty to build on.
They’re 2-0, and they likely won’t be tested too much this coming week. The Huskies only have one game, and it’ll be a home contest against 1-2 Le Moyne on Wednesday evening.
Another team which rolled to early wins, Iowa State remains in the mix as a Top 10 team in the CBS Sports rankings this week. The Cyclones are looking to build throughout the non-conference slate, and cement their chances in the Big 12 conference title race.
Only one game was on the docket for Iowa State for this week. The Cyclones faced Kansas City on Monday, a game they won by 26 inside Hilton Coliseum.
Gonzaga started the season with a bang, beating Baylor by a huge margin in a game which changed the perception of the Top 10 outlook. The Bulldogs had to hang on late vs. Arizona State to end the weekend, but kept themselves in the win column.
Mark Few’s team won’t be in action again until Friday night. The McCarthey Athletic Center will be the sight of UMass Lowell facing off against Gonzaga.
Even with a loss, Houston remains one of the top-ranked teams. Still, the Cougars fell down the board, with a few teams picking up big wins. However, the loss against Auburn should do nothing to convince voters the Cougars are less likely to make a run back up the CBS Sports rankings.
A bounce back opportunity is afoot for Houston in Week 2. They’ll play Louisiana and Hofstra this week, before an all-important game against Alabama in Week 3.
Purdue is off to an undefeated start, advancing to 3-0 after their victory over Yale on Monday. It was only an eight-point win, but the Boilermakers will take them any way they can get them.
There won’t be any room for error in their next game though. Purdue will welcome Alabama to the Mackey Arena in a highly-anticipated showdown between two of the top teams in the nation.
Tennessee is 2-0 after their tremendous win against Louisville on Saturday. The Volunteers are off to a fantastic start once again, and they’re looking to keep it going throughout November.
They won’t be challenged much in Week 2, with showdowns against Montana and Austin Peay on the docket. However, a clash with Virginia the following week looms large for the Volunteers.
