Champions League: PSG Dealt Injury Blow to Key Starter; Name Replacement vs. Girona

A couple of days before beginning their UEFA Champions League campaign, Paris Saint-Germain received terrible news as a key player will miss Matchday 1 against Girona on Wednesday at the Parc des Princes.

The Parisians secured a 3-1 win over Stade Brestois on Saturday, but that result came at a price. Gigio Donnarumma is out for the match against Girona due to muscular discomfort in his right thigh, the club has announced.

Moreover, the starter to replace Donnarumma has been made. According to Le Parisien, Matvey Safonov is likely to start against Girona in Wednesday’s Champions League match.

The 25-year-old has experience as he was the starting goalkeeper for FC Krasnodar, making 175 appearances across all competitions for the Russian club. Additionally, Safonov recorded 53 clean sheets during his tenure there.

PSG’s offense is clicking, and it will be interesting to see if it translates to the Champions League to help Safonov further.
