Chargers QB Justin Herbert leaves game with injury as Steelers move to 3-0

Date:

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert exited Sunday’s game after seemingly aggravating an ankle injury. Herbert left the game in the third quarter after being sacked by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Elandon Roberts.

Although the score was tied at 10-all when Herbert left, the Steelers scores a field goal and a touchdown in the first two drives of the fourth quarter to lock up the 20-10 win. Pittsburgh moves to 3-0, starting the season off strong.

Roberts’ sack on Herbert appeared to tweak a high ankle sprain that Herbert suffered last week against the Carolina Panthers. Herbert was initially ruled as questionable heading into Sunday, but was active ahead of the matchup.

Herbert was brought to the medical tent for further examination. During the third-quarter break, the Chargers announced Herbert was officially questionable to return. After the game, Herbert was wearing a walking boot, according to The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.

Before the injury, Herbert had completed 12 of 18 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown, with the Chargers then tied with the Steelers 10-10.

Herbert was replaced by backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who was unable to make real headway down the field for the Chargers.

Pittsburgh quarterback Justin Fields threw 245 yards, with two touchdowns — one rushing and one throwing. After scoring just one touchdown across the first two games, the Steelers’ offense found a bit more footing.
