CHICAGO – A Chicago teenager is on life support after being shot while visiting Mexico, where three of his family members were killed in the same incident.
The 14-year-old was celebrating his birthday and visiting family during winter break when the shooting occurred. His father and uncle – both also from Chicago – and cousin died in the attack.
The teen’s mother, who is at his bedside in the hospital, said he is in a medically induced coma. Family members are urging for the teen to be transported back to the U.S. for further medical treatment.
The U.S. State Department had previously issued a travel warning for the region of Mexico where the family was staying.
Officials have not provided further details about the circumstances of the shooting.
