CLEVELAND (WJW) – With a very heavy heart we announce the passing of our friend and colleague Dan Coughlin.

Dan was a legend in Cleveland sports journalism when he became a sportswriter for the Plain Dealer in 1964.

Dan joined Fox 8 in 1983 and continued with us as a contributor to “Friday Night Touchdown” through this past Friday night when he covered the St Edwards vs St Ignatius game. We are comforted in the fact that Dan did what he truly loved right up until his passing.

We have truly lost a legend and a great friend.

A local ‘staple’

The Saint Ignatius Wildcats in a Sunday social media post called it “heartbreaking news.”

“Dan was a Northeast Ohio staple for high school football,” the post reads. “We were proud to host Dan for Friday Night Touchdown this past Friday at the Saint Ignatius/Saint Edward game. Our thoughts are with the Coughlin family and FOX 8 community!”

The Kirtland Hornets stat crew on X called Coughlin a “legendary figure.”

“He left quite a legacy and our prayers go to his friends and family.”

Fellow Northeast Ohio journalists also offered kind words on social media on Sunday.

“Such a nice man. He always had a smile,” wrote Russ Mitchell on X. “Rest in peace.”
