Club Brugge shoot themselves in the foot in Champions League defeat to AC Milan

Club Brugge, once again, performed well in the Champions League. However, due to a red card to midfielder Raphael Onyedika with just five minutes to go in the first half, the side ended up losing 3-1 in Milan. Christian Pulisic’s first half goal came direct from a corner, despite Club having more than matched their opponents for most of the opening exchanged. The side forced goalkeeper Mike Maignan into a number of saves as Ferran Jutgla and Christos Tzolis went close.

Yet Onyedika’s tackle in the 40th minute was turned into red card after a VAR review. Despite being down to 10 men, the side came back into the game. At half-time Joaquin Seys was taking off, having picked up a yellow card in the first half. His replacement, Kyriani Sabbe, was the scorer of the sides equaliser. A well worked move eventually saw Hugo Vetlesen lay the ball off the the right-back who fired home.

Yet the man advantage began to have a bigger impact. 10 minutes after the equaliser, Tijjani Reijnders made it 2-1, with the Dutch midfielder grabbing his second in the 71st minute. This proved too much for Club and they fell to their second defeat in the competition. While from the outset, defeats to AC Milan and Dortmund would have been expected, in both games the side have competed well and could have earned at least a point.

Next up for Club in this years competition is a home clash against Aston Villa.
