Collin Morikawa on Hideki Matsuyama’s The Sentry performance: ‘Excuse my language, but f—-, 35 under par?’

Date:

Hideki Matsuyama had a historic victory Sunday at The Sentry, the PGA Tour’s opening event of 2025.

The 32-year-old captured his 11th PGA Tour title at Kapalua’s Plantation Course, shooting a record score in relation to par, 35 under, to beat Collin Morikawa by three shots.

Morikawa, who also finished runner-up at Kapalua in 2023, could think of only one NSFW way to describe Matsuyama’s performance.

“Yeah, excuse my language, but f–k, 35-under par, that’s low,” Morikawa said. “He was matching me yesterday shot for shot, and I felt like I was playing lights out, right? Like, yes, you could leave some shots out there, but you shoot 11 under on any golf course, you’re going to be happy, right? Today he just never let up. Then you get to the third hole and the guy holes it. I just knew I had to be on top of everything, and just kind of let a few slip on that front nine.”

Cam Smith shot 34 under at the 2022 Sentry, the previous record. Matsuyama also had 35 birdies or better this week, setting a new PGA Tour record in that category.

Sometimes, there’s only that four-letter word to describe one’s feelings.
