Costco Just Issued a Recall On This Popular Grocery Essential—Here’s What You Need to Know

Date:

Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand is back in the hot seat this week, as New York’s own Handsome Brook Farms has issued a voluntary recall of nearly 11,000 units of Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs. The company announcement and its official FDA publishing came on November 27, 2024 just before the Thanksgiving holiday. Citing a possible health risk due to the potential presence of the foodborne illness Salmonella, Handsome Brook Farms is doing all that they can to get ahead of the issue in a timely manner in order to ensure consumer safety.

The announcement specifically names 10,800 units of the Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs with UPC 9661910680, packaged in plastic egg cartons labeled with Kirkland Signature on the top. The recall specifically applies to the units with Julian code 327 and “Use By” date of January 5, 2025. This information can be found printed on the side of the 24-count plastic egg cartons. As of now, no other products have been named as being impacted by the recall.

The egg cartons in question were distributed to 25 Costco stores in the following states: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Affected shipments are being reported as leaving the farm as recently as November 22, 2024. The recall was initiated after Handsome Brook Farms determined that eggs not intended for retail distribution were accidentally packaged and distributed in retail packaging, leading to additional supply chain controls and much needed retraining in order to prevent future recurrence.

Salmonella is an organism that can lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and those with a weakened immune system. Healthy individuals who contract the illness can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In extreme cases, those infected can experience arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

As of now, no illnesses or complaints have been reported. And while the recall is being performed in cooperation with the FDA, impacted consumers are strongly encouraged to stop consuming the products and return them to their local Costco warehouse for a full refund—or dispose of the products immediately. Those who might have more questions or concerns, Handsome Brook Farms has opened up their phone line at 646-733-4532, ext. 1, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST. Consumers can also reach out to Handsome Brook Farms via email any day of the week at recall@hbfeggs.com.
