Cougars nipped by Lions

Sep. 11—ELNORA — The North Daviess Cougar tennis team dropped a close 3-2 match to Loogootee on Tuesday at North Daviess’ Tony Steele Courts.

Every match was balanced as ND’s Blake Huff downed Koen Waggner, 4-6, 6-4 and 7-5, while Cougar Coby Loheider lost 7-5, 5-7 and 5-7 to Wade Walton, and Cougar Koen Stoll won 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) over LHS’s William Lyon.

In doubles, Lions Cooper VanHoy and Joe Graber defeated Nate Raber and Aden Graber, 6-4 and 6-4, and ND’s Braylen Pridemore and Rex Freed lost to Emmitt Graber and Reed Brittan, 6-4, 2-6 and 3-6.

“Stoll was the first one off the courts with a hard-fought victory. One and two dubs were next with the Lions outlasting both in tight matches. At No. 1 and 2 singles Huff and Loheider went the distance both with similar 3 hour and 45 minute, three-set matches. Huff came away with a hard-fought win, and Loheider came away just short,” Schulte said.

“From top to bottom I felt our team played the well tonight; it just wasn’t quite good enough. We will regroup and move on to our next match against Washington Thursday night.”

The Cougar JV went 3-1 for the day.

Next up the (10-2) Cougars take on Washington Thursday evening at Lena Dunn.

WHS downs Boonville

The Washington boys’ tennis team competed well and defeated a conference foe Tuesday, beating Boonville 4-1.

“It is good for this team to get a win tonight. We have had some close matches lately that we came up short on. This was the first match of six this week and we plan to keep on competing and giving our best effort for more wins,” said WHS coach Jason Johnston.

WHS’s Joshua Meredith beat Wyatt Harpenau, 6-0 and 6-0, while Brody Armes beat Markston King 2 and 2, and No. 3 Tristan Zollars won 6-0 and 6-2 to complete the singles sweep.

In doubles, Hayden Tomey and Layton Welsh picked up a 6-3 and 6-3 win, but Caleb Bouchie and Brooks Chestnut lost 7-5, 1-6 and 0-1.

The Washington junior high school boys tennis team also came away with a victory on Tuesday against Vincennes Rivet, 4-1.

WJHS wins came from Alexander Hannah (8-2), Owen Skomp (8-1), Wyatt Barber and Giovanni Trejo (8-1), and Oliver Armstrong and Austin Stowell (8-5).

Vikes beat Rivet, 5-0

MONTGOMERY — The Barr-Reeve tennis team won 5-0 against conference foe Vincennes Rivet on Tuesday night to go 10-1 on the season.

At No. 1, Xavier Meiring beat Henry Holka, 6-0, 6-0, Daniel Underwood beat Bracey Morron 6-2, 6-1 and Kierson Lengacher beat Carter Stevenson, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Levi Lester and Isaac Madison beat Cody Ladson and Max Weiss, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles Kyle Graber and Brody Swartzentruber beat Gage Letts and Miles Holka, 6-0, 6-2.

In JV, B-R’s Hayden Wagler won 6-3.

The Vikings play their last conference match against South Knox on Wednesday night.
