Cowgirl tennis team opens athletics school year at Hesston Invitational

Date:

The Abilene Cowgirls tennis team opened their season last Thursday at the Hesston Invitational, and in doing so they became the first to athletes from AHS to compete during this school year.

The difficult early season tournament produced one individual medal placing by Freshman Tessa Herrman in #2 singles.

Herrman who just started playing tennis, was playing in her first ever tournament. After losing her first match, she then earned a medical default victory, and finished her day with a convincing 8-2 victory. Also finishing in 6th place in the tournament by earning a win was Seniors Aleah Ortiz, and Allison Rose.

Head coach Megan Berry’s comments:

“In what seems to now be tradition, the Hesston meet was hot, windy, and loaded with great competition. I would predict multiple state medalists will come out of the field we saw yesterday. “

“For us it was about getting better and I certainly observed that from all the girls. We got some of those nerves out of the way, and definitely got better between our first and 3rd matches. Early tennis season is rough and everyone has things to get figured out. Right away I know we need to work on not giving away points through our mistakes. We’ve got to keep the ball in play regardless of what that looks like. The girls all expressed an eagerness to get back to work and I love that about this group. “
