Cyclones Basketball aims to repeat last year’s success

Date:

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – The Watertown Boys’ Basketball Team is looking for a repeat of its success from last season.

Coach Ed Adams’ Cyclones will be looking to build on a 2023-24 season that saw Watertown post a 15-6 overall record, 10-2 in the Frontier League A/B division, and lose to West Genesee in the Section 3 Class AA quarterfinals.

Adams likes what he sees early on from this year’s group he has assembled.

“I see a lot of depth on this team. I feel like this team, with the returners we have and the JV guys that are coming up from last year, I see a lot of basketball IQ guys. I see guys that like to share the ball and play as a team,” said Adams.

This year’s team is a veteran group with 7 seniors on the roster with some holes to fill in the starting lineup with the loss of Parker Moffett, Lawson Wise, and Seth Charlton to graduation.

The players feel this year’s group is a well-balanced one that should be strong in the backcourt.

“I think we’ve got a lot of good guard play, a lot of good shooters. We should be able to play fast, play good defense, and stretch teams out,” said Kyle Daly.

“I think the strength is really in our guards and our play all around the floor. We can really stretch teams out and attack their weaknesses and overall play a good game,” said Jack Adams.

“Our team is really guard-heavy this year, but we’re gonna be quick, be fast. We’ve gotta be able to shoot, be able to outpace teams and get them tired,” said John Flowers.

What will the Cyclones need to do to repeat as Frontier League champs and make another run in Sectionals?

“I definitely think playing as a team. No individual stuff,” said Nico Spaziani.

“We gotta play our game, play as a team, use every guy on the floor. Guys have gotta know their roles, and if we do that, we should be very successful in the league and in Sectional play,” said Adams.

The Cyclones open their season on December 3 as they host General Brown in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
