Darryn Peterson becomes one of Kansas basketball’s top rated recruits ever

Date:

Darryn Peterson is one of the most highly regarded prospects that Bill Self has landed during his two decades at KU. The five-star recruit announced his commitment to KU on Friday, which gives Self one of the top high school talents in the country. Peterson picked Kansas over finalists Ohio State, USC and K-State and an offer list that included over 20 other schools.

The guard holds a 0.9992 rating in the 247Sports Composite, which is generated by taking into account how the major recruiting services rate a specific recruit. Peterson’s rating places him as the third-highest-rated high school recruit to commit to Kansas in the internet rankings era (which goes back to 2000). Peterson is KU’s highest-rated commit since Josh Jackson committed to be a Jayhawk in the class of 2016.

The only other KU players who held a composite score higher than Peterson are Andrew Wiggins (No. 1) and Josh Jackson (No. 2). The top 10 is rounded out by Josh Selby (No. 4), Cliff Alexander (No. 5), David Padgett (No. 6) and Xavier Henry (No. 7), Cheick Diallo (No. 8), Kelly Oubre (No. 9) and Quentin Grimes (No. 10).

In terms of his ranking, Peterson comes in at No. 3 nationally in the 247Sports Composite rankings. He also comes in at No. 3 nationally in the 247Sports Top-150. Again, his national ranking is the highest since Jackson who was the No. 1 player in his class. The next closest in recent memory would be Quentin Grimes, who was ranked No. 10 in the 247Sports Composite. Peterson is ranked as the nation’s top combo guard in the 2025 class.

KU prioritized Peterson over the last year. Self and the KU staff went all out in pursuit of the 6-foot-5 guard. KU was able to get Peterson on campus for an official visit over the summer. The visit came in the midst of a stretch that saw Bill Self attend a large number of Peterson’s games on the Adidas 3SSB circuit over the summer. During the fall recruiting period, Self was out in California at Prolific Prep to see Peterson multiple times. In the end, KU was able to get him on board.
