Deebo Samuel is going coast-to-coast.

The San Francisco 49ers made a splash during the NFL combine on Saturday, sending the star receiver to the Washington Commanders. The trade was confirmed by USA TODAY Sports’ Tyler Dragon.

Samuel requested a trade during his exit meeting with the team, something general manager John Lynch said they would be willing to accommodate this time around.

That was Samuel’s second trade request since 2022. The 49ers reportedly turned down the New York Jets’ offer that included the No. 10 pick in the 2022 NFL draft, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Now Samuel lands in Washington as the team looks to build off an unlikely NFC championship game appearance.

Here’s everything to know about the details of the trade.

Deebo Samuel trade details

Here are the details of the deal, per reports:

  • Commanders receive: Deebo Samuel
  • 49ers receive: Fifth-round pick

Samuel heads to Washington in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

The deal cannot become official until March 12, when the new league year officially begins.

While an NFC competitor, the Commanders became a likely landing spot given their need to add to the offense around Jayden Daniels and the presence of general manager, Adam Peters.

Peters was a member of the 49ers’ front office from 2017-2023. He served as the vice president of player personnel from 2017 until 2020, when he moved into the role of assistant general manager.

The 29-year-old Samuel now joins a receiving room that includes Terry McLaurin, but noticeably lacked depth beyond him.

Deebo Samuel contract

The Commanders are taking on the remainder of Samuel’s contract and are set to pay him the full $17.55 million salary for 2025, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It’s the final year of the three-year, $71.5 million deal that he signed to rescind his last trade request.
