Deja Kelly’s hot shooting leads Oregon women’s basketball past Nevada

Date:

In its second game of the 2024-25 season, Oregon women’s basketball handled Nevada, 76-58, fueled by the scoring prowess of star transfer Deja Kelly.

The former North Carolina guard put up 21 points on 9-13 shooting to lead the Ducks (2-0), going off in the third quarter and showcasing her midrange and three-point touch. Oregon also got 13 points and seven rebounds from Amina Muhammad, 12 points from Peyton Scott, and 10 points from Alexis Whitfield.

The Ducks and Wolfpack started out sloppy, both committing six turnovers apiece in the first quarter. Scott brought the energy early for the Ducks, however, scoring six of their first eight points en route to an 8-2 lead.

Muhammad remained active inside throughout the first half for Oregon, who trailed Nevada 14-12 after the first quarter.

The Ducks blew the game open in the second quarter, fueled by Muhammad’s hustle and the scoring of Scott and Kelly. Oregon rattled off a 14-0 run to take a 32-19 lead, capped by a transition and-one by Scott.

Oregon led 40-23 at the half, forcing eight turnovers in the second quarter alone from the Wolfpack while the Ducks committed just two of their own.

Kelly went off for 10 points in the third, including a pair of threes, extending the Oregon lead to 64-40 through three quarters.

The Wolfpack clawed back in the fourth, but the deficit was too large to overcome and Kelly too lethal from beyond the arc for a comeback to fully materialize. Oregon finished the game out with its defense, ending up with 20 forced turnovers and holding Nevada to 44% shooting.

The new-look Ducks blew out California Baptist in their opener, and look ahead to a matchup with a ranked Baylor team on Sunday in Eugene.

Next game: Oregon (2-0) vs. No. 12 Baylor

  • When: Sunday, Nov. 10
  • Time: 7 p.m. PT
  • Where: Matthew Knight Arena, Eugene
