DePaul Women’s Basketball Opens Preseason Against Lewis on Friday – DePaul University Athletics

Date:

CHICAGO – DePaul women’s basketball is set to open the 2024-25 campaign on Friday, Oct. 18 when it hosts Lewis University in an exhibition game at McGrath-Phillips Arena. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. and admission is free for all attendees.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early for DePaul’s preseason basketball event, Blue Madness, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Blue Demons 2024-25 roster features eight returners in addition to eight newcomers. Among the fresh faces include a pair of transfers and six true freshmen. Meg Newman and Taylor Johnson-Matthews provide collegiate experience on an otherwise youthful squad, transferring from Alabama and Pearl River Community College, respectively.

Leading the returners is graduate forward Jorie Allen, back for her final year of collegiate eligibility, after averaging career-bests of 11.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game a season ago. Allen notched four double-doubles in 2023-24. Junior guard Kate Clarke will be relied upon for her scoring prowess, after recording 9.8 points per game in 11 starts in her first campaign as a Blue Demon. Clarke posted 13 double-digit scoring outings as a sophomore.

The 2024-25 schedule will once again be a tough one, with nine of DePaul’s scheduled opponents ranked or receiving votes in the AP Preseason Poll.

A season ago, Lewis posted a 23-9 record including a 19-3 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) en route to a league title. The Flyers return two of their top three scorers from 2023-24 including Jenna Badali (14.0 ppg) and Taylor Gugliuzza (12.2 ppg). Keisha Newell is in her third season as head coach of the program.

In November of 2023, DePaul took down the Flyers 68-45 in an exhibition at Wintrust Arena, using a 20-4 differential in the third quarter to solidify the preseason victory. Allen posted a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds in the triumph.

The last time DePaul hosted a game in Lincoln Park was Feb. 16, 2020, a 97-65 win over Xavier.

Friday will serve as the first of two exhibition matchups for DePaul with its next test coming on Oct. 28 at Wintrust Arena. Tipoff against Winona State is set for 7 p.m.

The Blue Demons will open the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 6 against Mercyhurst.
