Dillon Hunter was ejected after receiving a flagrant-2 foul in the second half in Clemson basketball‘s 91-88 overtime loss to in-state rival South Carolina.
Hunter, who finished with six points, three rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes, was issued the flagrant-2 foul after headbutting a South Carolina defender. The Tigers (9-3) fell to the Gamecocks (8-3) on the road at Colonial Life Arena.
Why was Dillon Hunter ejected?
After Clemson’s Jake Heidbreder made a 3-pointer to cut into its deficit, the Tigers full-court pressed South Carolina on the inbound pass. However, Hunter headbutted South Carolina’s Morris Ugusuk, who hit the floor with 12:46 left in the game.
Officials reviewed the play and determined it qualified for a flagrant-2 foul.
What is a flagrant-2 foul?
A flagrant-2 foul is more severe than a flagrant 1, which is “excessive in nature or unnecessary or avoidable, uncalled for or not required by the circumstances of the play.” A flagrant-2 foul is described as “brutal, harsh or cruel or dangerous or punishing,” and the offending player is automatically ejected from the game.
Both flagrant fouls result in two free throws and possession of the ball to the other team.
Will Dillon Hunter be suspended for Clemson’s next game?
The ACC can review the incident and issue a suspension if it deems the incident worthy of a suspension.
