A recent study from SmartAsset found the 10 wealthiest counties in the state of North Carolina, as well as the most affluent counties countrywide.
SmartAsset, a financial adviser guide, determined rankings for counties across the United States by comparing median income, investment income and property value. These three metrics determined the “wealth index score” for each county.

What are the top 10 wealthiest counties in NC?
Here are the top 10 counties in North Carolina, according to SmartAsset data (median income, investment income, median home value, wealth index):

North Carolina’s median income is $50,305, average investment income is $44,268 and median home value is $238,567.

Where do Cape Fear region counties rank on the list?
Moore County, at No., 8 on the list, is the only county in the Cape Fear region to crack the top 10.
Harnett County, just north of Cumberland County, is the next wealthiest in the area, ranking at No. 29 in the state. Harnett’s national rank is No. 1,045. The county reported a median income of $64,992, an average investment income of $34,315 and a median home value of $297,835.
Hoke County, to the west of Cumberland County, ranked No. 60 in the state, making it the No. 1,808 wealthiest county in the country. Hoke County reported a median income of $57,141, an average investment income of $15,203 and a median home value of $264,861
Cumberland County was not far below Hoke at No. 62 on the statewide list and No.1,869 nationwide. The county reported a median income of $55,551, an average investment income of $37,940 and a median home value of $221,546.
Sampson County, to the east of Cumberland, ranked at No. 79 in the state. Sampson’s national rank is No. 2,364. The county reported a median income of $49,963, an average investment income of $48,671 and a median home value of $154,907.
The two lowest-ranking counties in the area are also among the least wealthy in North Carolina.
Bladen County, just south of Cumberland, ranked at No. 95 in the state. Bladen’s national rank is No. 2,888. The county reported a median income of $40,476, an average investment income of $37,201 and a median home value of $137,510.
Robeson County, southwest of Cumberland, ranked right below Bladen at No. 96 in the state. Robeson’s national rank is No. 2,915. The county reported a median income of $39,393, an average investment income of $35,716 and a median home value of $136,807.
What NC county has the highest median income?
Wake, which was also No. 1 on the list for overall wealth, had the highest median income at $96,734. Also following the order of overall wealth were the second and third most wealthy: Union at $95,533 and Orange at $85,785.
The overall median income across all counties is $50,305.
What NC county has the highest investment income?
Macon County, which ranked No. 26 for overall wealth, was also the N.C. county with the highest investment income at $121,707.
Orange, which was No. 3 for overall wealth, was next on the list, with an investment income median of $110,015.
Mecklenburg, at No. 7 on the list for overall wealth, ranked third for investment income with a median of $90,138.
What NC county has the highest median home value?
Dare was the highest on the list for median home value in North Carolina, with a value of $599,557. Next was Chatham, with a value of $560,160, and Currituck with a value of $531,066.
What NC county had the lowest ranking in wealth?
Of the state’s 100 counties, Washington County ranked last, with a median income of $38,927, median investment income of $26,869 and median home value more than $150,000 lower than the state average at $114,573.
