Duke head basketball coach Jon Scheyer praises Cooper Flagg for attitude towards teammates during Blue Devils’ win over Wofford | Sporting News

Date:

Cooper Flagg and the Duke Blue Devils bounced back from their recent loss against Kentucky with an utterly dominant 86-35 win over Wofford. Flagg posted a relatively quiet stat line in the blowout win, dropping nine points, eight rebounds, and six assists in just 28 minutes of action.

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer praised Flagg for his leadership in the win, giving the superstar his flowers for playing team basketball rather than hunting for his own shots.

“For us, here’s a great bounce-back game.” Scheyer said. “Really proud of how we shared the ball today … I think sharing the ball is a great sign of our guy’s responding to Tuesday night. Cooper and Kon (Knueppel) in particular, they didn’t score a lot of points. It would be very easy for one of those guys to hunt in the second half. They’re just making the right plays, and to me that’s contagious.”

Duke made history with Blue Devils’ defensive performance

With the Wofford demolition, Duke accomplished a historic feat by allowing the fewest points by an opponent in program history during the shot-clock era. The Blue Devils had not allowed 35 points or fewer in a game since 1968.

Scheyer shouted his team out for their incredible defense, pointing to their competitive nature as a catalyst for the performance.

“Proud of our team,” Scheyer said. “Proud of the character this group has. The competitiveness to come out right away, to be ready. Not just to play but to compete at a high level.”

Flagg and his squad will look to keep things rolling in their upcoming game against the No. 17-ranked Arizona Wildcats.
