E. Coli Outbreak Across At Least 18 States Causes Organic Carrot Recall

Date:

Here’s what we know and which stores sold the impacted vegetables.

Before you serve up a veggie tray to your holiday guests, start a batch of roasted carrot soup, or bake a carrot cake, check your carrots. That’s because there is a massive recall underway of baby carrots and organic whole carrots sold at grocery stores across the South and the rest of the country.

Grimmway Farms, a large California carrot grower that sells to grocery stores across the country, has issued the recall after a possible outbreak of E. coli that has already killed one person.

The recall of packaged organic carrots was issued on Saturday after nearly 40 cases of illness were recorded in 18 states. At least 15 people were hospitalized and one person has died, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

“State and local public health officials are interviewing people about the foods they ate in the week before they got sick,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Sunday. “Of the 27 people interviewed, 26 reported eating carrots. The FDA’s traceback investigation identified Grimmway Farms as the common supplier of organic whole and baby carrots in this outbreak.

The carrots were sold in stores across the country, including Puerto Rico. If you picked up carrots at Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, Publix, Food Lion, Target, Whole Foods, or Trader Joe’s be sure to check the brand and the best-if-used-by date.

The recalled baby carrots had best-if-used by dates from 9/11/2024 to 11/12/2024 and brands include 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O-Organic, President’s Choice, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, Wholesome Pantry.

The recalled whole organic carrots don’t have best-buy dates, but were available for purchase in stores approximately from 8/14/2024 through 10/23/2024, per the CDC. Brands included in the recall are 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O-Organic, President’s Choice, Simple Truth, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, Wholesome Pantry

If you have any recalled carrots from Grimmway in your home (I did!), the CDC recommends throwing them out or returning them to the store.
