Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys with a concussion.

Hurts has been in concussion protocol since his head hit the turf during Sunday’s loss to the Washington Commanders. He did not participate in practice this week, while backup Kenny Pickett took over the starter’s duties.

Pickett has been dealing with a rib injury since coming in for Hurts last week, but he was a full participant on Thursday and has been given the green light to play.

“Tested out some different things padding-wise, just making sure I feel good with it for Sunday,” said Pickett, who added he won’t have any limitations going forward. “Just something I’m going to have to deal with. So, yeah, I’ll be ready to go Sunday.”

With Hurts out, the Eagles signed quarterback Ian Book to their practice squad. Tanner McKee remains on the roster and will likely serve as Pickett’s backup.

The 12-3 Eagles could lock up the NFC East title with a win or tie over the Cowboys. Should they lose, Philadelphia could get help in the way of a Washington Commanders loss or tie to the Atlanta Falcons.

“It’s a big opportunity,” Pickett said Thursday. “Been working hard to stay ready. Felt like I was in a good position last game with my preparation. Now having a week to practice, I’ll feel even better going into the stadium. I’m excited. Just want to get the win.”

It’s been over two years since Hurts did not start a regular-season game for the Eagles. In Week 16 of the 2022 NFL season, he missed a game due to a shoulder injury and was replaced by Gardner Minshew.
