In the final session, Sri Lanka faced an uphill battle with just three wickets remaining and a significant gap to bridge to avoid the follow-on. Jayasuriya provided solid support to Mendis but made the costly decision to attack the spinner, resulting in his dismissal. Mendis, however, remained unfazed, continuing to score quickly. England turned to their spinners, but Mendis held firm, reaching his half-century. A brilliant piece of fielding from Ollie Pope resulted in Lahiru Kumara’s run-out, opening the door for England to wrap up the innings. Mendis was eventually dismissed for 74, with Sri Lanka conceding a hefty 231-run lead. England opted not to enforce the follow-on and came out to bat, losing Dan Lawrence early but managing to add over 20 runs, extending their lead to more than 250 runs.
