Ex Bayern Munich Star To Hold Down Starting Spot At Inter Milan Next Season

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is set to hold down his place in the Inter Milan starting eleven for another season.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that the Nerazzurri will keep Sommer on until the end of his contract.

Former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach keeper Sommer has had an iron grip on the starting spot at Inter this summer.

This is Sommer’s second season at the Nerazzurri. He joined from Bayern in the summer of 2023.

And the 35-year-old has played every minute of the campaign so far. Across both Serie A and the Champions League.

Inter did sign a long-term replacement for Sommer during the summer transfer window.

Josep Martinez arrived from Genoa in the summer. The Spaniard is Sommer’s backup for this season – but the hope is that he can inherit the starting role in the longer term.

After all, Sommer will be 36 at the end of this season.

It is hardly as though the Swiss will be able to keep playing forever.

However, Sommer has yet to show any real signs of decline. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi still fully trusts him both between the posts and with the ball at his feet.

Therefore, Martinez has yet to get a single opportunity this season.

Sommer’s contract with Inter runs out at the end of June 2026.

Inter have an option to terminate that deal a season early, at the end of next June.

But considering the continuing standard of Sommer’s performances – as well as the fact that Inter will want to have him on for the Club World Cup next summer – the club have no intention of exercising that option.
