Former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones reportedly eyeing playoff contenders as potential next team

Date:

Former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is expected to clear waivers on Monday afternoon, and a handful of teams, including some playoff contenders, may be in the mix for the 27-year-old’s services.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings are “two of the likeliest teams” to add Jones, who wants to sign with a playoff contender. Schefter adds that the results of Week 12 could have an impact on Jones’ decision.

Meanwhile, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the San Francisco 49ers, with Brock Purdy dealing with a shoulder injury, “would make a lot of sense and could be very real,” while the Las Vegas Raiders “are said to like Jones as an organization.”

Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 draft, was released by the Giants on Friday after previously being demoted, seemingly to fourth string, with the Giants having no intention of playing him because of his $23 million injury guarantee.

Jones requested and was granted his release, ending a tumultuous run as the Giants’ starting quarterback. In 69 starts, Jones had a record of 24-44-1 with 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. The Giants made the playoffs just once during Jones’ tenure, and he helped lead them to a road win over the Minnesota Vikings before falling to Philadelphia in the Divisional Round in 2022.

The Giants will start Tommy DeVito at quarterback on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with Drew Lock serving as backup, and Tim Boyle likely up as the emergency third quarterback.
