Former South Carolina basketball star suffers injury, could miss start of NBA season

Date:

Former South Carolina basketball star GG Jackson had a tremendous showing in his first year in the NBA, but his second season could be delayed.

On Friday, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that Jackson broke his foot while playing basketball earlier this week. While further details surrounding the injury have been scarce, most broken foot injuries require a minimum of six weeks before resuming athletic activities and could require a much longer time on the shelf depending on the severity of the break. Even if Jackson’s recovery is on the lighter side, he is in danger of missing the start of the 2024-2025 NBA season.

During his first year with the Memphis Grizzlies, Jackson began the season with the Memphis Hustle as his two-way contract saw him spend much of the early portion of the season in the G League. However, once he was called up to the NBA squad for good, he showed the basketball world what he was capable of doing on the hardwood.

Once he became a part of the rotation in Memphis, Jackson averaged over 17 points per game and nearly 5 rebounds per contest, and he showcased an ability to score at all three levels effectively while providing some help as an athletic and moldable defender.

Despite playing less than half of the year as a part of the Grizzlies’ rotation, GG Jackson made the 2023-2024 NBA All-Rookie team and earned a long-term contract after the organization bought out his two-way deal and signed him through at least the 2026-2027 season, after which he can hit restricted free agency.

During his South Carolina basketball career, a one-year stay with his hometown Gamecock team, Jackson showed flashes of his potential but didn’t have the type of consistency he had hoped to show at the college level. However, he figured things out in the NBA and is considered one of the league’s brightest young stars.
