CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Today is a bit of a transition day as clouds gradually increase ahead of a significant storm system expected to affect our area later tomorrow.
(KCRG)
Highs will remain pretty seasonal, staying in the 30s throughout the day, and this cool trend will persist into the weekend. As evening approaches, the cloud cover will continue to thicken in advance of a low-pressure system that’s making its way across the Mississippi Valley.
Your First Alert: Wednesday’s Freezing Rain/Drizzle
It’s this system that will bring the wintry weather to Iowa, starting with some freezing drizzle in the morning hours tomorrow. The freezing drizzle will likely impact southern Iowa the most, but northern Iowa may see some light snow showers as well.

By the afternoon and evening, the precipitation will transition into a mix of freezing rain and drizzle across eastern Iowa. This shift in the weather will lead to slippery conditions, especially on the roads. If you’re planning to be out and about, be sure to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and road conditions because traveling will become increasingly tricky. A glaze of ice up to 0.10 inches is expected, which may make surfaces slick and hazardous for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Ice accumulation like this can be deceptive, so even if it doesn’t look like much, it can still cause dangerous travel conditions, so it’s always best to take extra caution. Thankfully, after this midweek storm passes through, the weather pattern will settle down a bit for Thursday and Friday. While we’ll experience quieter conditions, it won’t last long.
Your First Alert: Wintry Weekend Weather

As we approach the weekend, we could see another wintry mix of rain and snow starting on Saturday morning. So, after the midweek storm, we’ll need to be prepared for yet another round of wintery weather that could impact travel. Be sure to check the forecast regularly, especially if you have plans to travel later in the week or on the weekend.
